Doing what you love The dream for most authors and writers is to make a career (or even a side hustle) from their creative talents, being able to do what you love and make money when and where you want. But when you think of writing and making money, you may only come up with a couple of ideas and even then, these ideas may be limited. However, with some creativity you can do what you love and make some money at the same time, here are TEN great ways for you to make money with writing. One – Start a blog Writing a blog is a great way to share your creativity and has been used by many talented writers to create an additional income stream, although it does take work, dedication, and consistency with your posting. Setting up a blog can be done quite reasonably and without any knowledge of coding etc., with lots of great services offering build your own site, it is fairly straightforward, you will however need to purchase a domain name and then link it to your site (but your website provider will be able to walk you through this). Once you have a site up and running, you need to optimize it for search engines and post great content on a regular basis, making money comes from advertising and even selling products or services from your site, the more visitors you get, the more you can earn. Two – Publish your own book Publishing a book is much more accessible for every author and writer, with companies like KDP Publishing, IngramSpark and Lulu, you can self-publish your manuscript without having to get an agent or being signed by a publishing house. You’ll also find that with KDP Publishing there’s no fee to sign up and then publish your book, they even offer free ISBNs for their authors too, however, you will need to ensure that your book is proofread, edited, formatted, and has a professional cover design. Once you have your book ready and it’s been checked, formatted and a cover created, you will need to work hard at self-promotion, being an indie author is a great way to get your creative work out to the world, but it does require work in self-promotion to sell copies. Three – Content creation for social media Being active across social media platforms is so important for every business, but many of these businesses don’t have the time to spend writing content, so they outsource this to freelance content creators, and this is where you can help. Writing great content on a regular basis can be a nice side hustle, it's even easier if you are a fan/user of the most popular platforms too. Selling content to a business can be done via your own website, just ensure that it’s well presented and geared towards providing a professional service to businesses. Or you can sell your service as a content writer via freelance websites, through these you can set up a profile and sell specific writing services. Four – Ghostwrite There are many people who have a story to tell or information to give, but they don’t have the creative skills or time to write a complete book, and this can be a great opportunity for writers who like to help others in achieving their publishing goals. Again, this is another service where having your own businesses website will be advantageous, or you can also sell this service via freelance sites too. But be aware, it can be a long process and does require in depth collaboration with the person you are writing for. Five – Specific Tourist Guides If you happen to live in a part of the world which is popular for tourists, why not use your local knowledge to write a brilliant guide to your hometown, this you can publish as either an eBook. Paperback or even a website or blog. Again, if you are publishing through your own website, then you will need to focus your efforts on driving traffic to the site, you will be able to promote with paid advertising on Google, getting back links from other sites, social media and guest posting for other travel sites/businesses. Six – Selling your skills and knowledge Being an expert in a specific area is something that you can cash in on through your writing, creating a guide, non-fiction book or even a course is a good way to help others and at the same time make additional income. Ways to sell your skills are through eBooks, online courses such as selling it on Udemy etc., your own website or blog. Seven – Write Resumes The job market is always busy with employers looking to recruit great employees, and if you are a talented writer there are job hunters who will pay for your services. Being able to create a resume which highlights the skills of a person can earn you additional money and is a constructive way to help others at the same time. There are lots of freelance sites where you can sell this skill, you can also consider starting your own resume writing business too, although this may take a little longer to get off the ground. Eight – Write for someone else’s website or online magazine
Most websites and businesses are always creating new content to keep their pages current and of interest to their readers, so if you have knowledge in a specific area (or are willing to do some in-depth research) there is a way to sell your articles to them. Getting in touch with companies can be done via LinkedIn, their websites and promoting your own services via freelance sites and your own website. Please note that guest posting for blogs is very rarely a paying gig, however, it is still a great way to get your name (and your work) seen, most blogs will link back to your site too, so if you are trying to build your own website/business, this can be a great way to grown interest. Nine – Become a Copywriter If you are a descriptive writer who is able to take raw information from a client and turn it into something that is both interesting, and more importantly, sells what you client is offering, then becoming a copywriter may be for you. Companies are always looking for talented writers to help with their sales copy, website information, marketing text, emails, social media and more. However, this is a popular field to break into and it will take a while to build up a client list. Ten – Translate If you are bilingual and have a good working knowledge of a second language, then using your skills to translate articles, documents and even books can be a great opportunity. And with the internet making the workplace more global than ever before, you could be based in California but translating for clients who are based in Europe. Staring off via freelances sites is a good option, but you can always grow your own site and business too.
